HVO fuel FAQs
Press releases — HVO and Epiroc rigs
Frequently asked questions
Which products are compatible with HVO?
See the information in the above press releases. When in doubt, check with your Epiroc contact to confirm that your machine can be operated on HVO. |
What is HVO?
HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) is a renewable diesel fuel made from waste fats and oils. It offers a cleaner alternative to traditional diesel, significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions throughout its lifecycle. |
Can I blend normal diesel with HVO?
All HVO blends can be used for HVO compatible products. HVO is designed to be fully compatible with conventional diesel, and it can be used in any diesel engine without modifications. This includes mixing it at any ratio with fossil diesel. |
What impact does HVO have on service intervals, installation and infrastructure?
Moving from fossil diesel to HVO does not require any changes to service, installation, or infrastructure, as it works similarly to mineral diesel, which makes the transition to HVO a smooth and practical alternative solution. |
What are the key benefits of HVO?
|
What is to be considered when sourcing HVO?
The sustainability of HVO largely depends on the source of the feedstocks used and production processes. Due to this, check with your HVO supplier what feedstocks and production processes have been used to minimize negative environmental impacts. A sustainability certified HVO is recommended. |
Is HVO the same as biodiesel?
No, HVO is different from traditional biodiesel (FAME). HVO has a similar chemical structure to fossil diesel, while biodiesel has a different composition and may require engine modifications if used in high concentrations. |
Are there any drawbacks to using HVO?
The main drawback is the current higher cost compared to conventional diesel. However, the environmental benefits and potential for future cost reductions as production scales up make it a compelling option |
